Sunday XI beat Great Brickhill by 56 runs

A day for the young guns at Great Brickhill for the last match of the season. Sam Carter and KGS opened the batting with the fearlessness of youth and took the game away from Brickhill right for the start. Six an over from the first 20 overs was an excellent platform, and Sam only fell after drinks, caught on the boundary on his first slip in concentration. He was especially strong through the covers off the back foot, punishing anything short. Kit gave a few chances but made the most of them, finishing up with a very fine 80. Other than some entertaining hitting at the end from WR-T, the rest of the batting was inconsistent, but 230 was a competitive score. WR-T and Ollie Fairhurst then ripped the heart out of the Brickhill batting, with five wickets down for 20 off the first 11 overs. WR-T's over to the Brickhill number three was a classic, working him over before finding the edge through to PC. Reminiscent of Freddie Flintoff to Ponting in the 2005 Ashes and a pleasure to watch from 2nd slip. A change of bowling allowed Brickhill back into the game, but wickets fell regularly and the game was never in doubt. Morris batted well to record 51, and was last man out, but it must be said he needs to work on his banter. Something for winter coaching, perhaps. Lovatt's W and G took three wickets between them and Farr wrapped up the tail. A good end to an excellent season for the club. Looking forward to seeing you in 2012.

Sunday XI beat Aldbury Entertainers by 52 runs

A classic Sunday match. Torrential rain at the start ("We'll never play" "You're mad, skip" "What a waste of time" said 10 Cublington Eeyores). Some excellent, and unexpected contributions, a good result and a couple of quiet beers afterwards. After we had squeezed out the wicket, the sun came out and Cublington batted, and after some good early bowling accounted for young KGS, Simmo and Paul China, yes Paul China, settled down to accumulate a big total. PC fell for a Cublington career best 41, in a stand worth 98. ("He's scoring my runs", muttered KGS.) Sim also hit a career best, falling agonisingly close to a first ever ton. Sam Carter added 43 off 37 balls and the tail failed to wag but 236 for seven was a decent score though. In reply Farzi was de man. After Gadsby and Howe had taken the shine [sic] off the ball Adam the Bandit snaffled his first off a leg side full toss hoiked to the longest boundary to the only man on the field likely to catch it, and got the oppo skipper so LBW that he was walking, all in his first over. Two more followed, but he declined the opportunity to fulfill his contractual obligations and take the all important jug activating 5th wicket. Boo hiss! Michael Reilly bowled one over, but his radar was off and he was not at his most effective best, and if the oppo hadn't decided to chase balls pitching at point and square leg and just taken the wides, would probably have won in that over. The over is probably still going, somewhere is a parallel universe. There were still one or two hitters in the Aldbury ranks, though, very keen to entertain and to chase the Cubs total, until the introduction of Tim 'he's big, he's bad, he's better than his dad' George. Tim's first senior bowling stint yielded the very creditable figures of seven overs, one for 37. Wild celebrations greeted Tim's first wicket, and probably, now that the floodgates have been opened, the first of many for the club.

2nd XI beat Leighton Buzzard III by 63 runs

A small wobble perhaps, but Cubs 2nd XI overcame that and finished an excellent debut season in the Cherwell league with another win. With minds perhaps already on the Cublington Feast at the Unicorn that evening the advice of the dressing room was 'stick 'em in, skittle 'em out and let's get to the pub'. So we won the toss and batted. An excellent attacking innings of 45 from Andy Carter, supported by 22 from Stalky George and 19 from Nick Osborne gave us a base of 107 for three off 20 overs, and while the middle order collpased like an abandoned souffle, Jacob Watson, with 30 not out, took us to a relatively comfortable 206, and himself to a season's average of exactly 100. One up on the Don. Not bad for a number eight batsman. Ben Orchard and Craig Spencer also ensured a decently waggy tail. In reply Leighton Buzzard also started strongly, with Allbury hitting 41, until Sam Carter trapped him LBW. Stalky George kept chipping away with has flat, sharply turning darts, and the run out of skipper Raine by Craig Spencer with the score on 89 proved crucial as there was little batting left in the tank. Big Jacob Watson cleaned up the tail. Both he and Stalky finshed with four wickets, Stalky denied a five-fer by Watson's fast, straight bowling. We'll not mention the dropped catch and missed stumping off his bowling, and I'm sure no-one noticed. Leighton Buzzard subsided from 131 for 3 to 143 all out. A great season from Cubs 2s, and the team was kind enough to give the skipper, who steps down after four seasons and four championships in charge, a guard of honour on leaving the field.

1st XI beat Brackley by 6 wickets

Cublington 1st XI secured the division 5 title at Brackley on Saturday with a comfortable win. A very green track meant the toss was critical, and after a season of failures skipper Tomlinson was delighted to return to the dressing room having finally won one and had asked Brackley to bat. This decision proved a good one as from the off the track produced some variable bounce and little pace. Brackley skipper Carpenter was the first to fall caught behind of WRT, and within 10 overs Brackley had slipped to 25 for 3 with WRT accounting for 3 of the top four, all from catches behind the wicket. When Jon Waugh took his first wicket with a sacrificial catch lobbed to Leggett at short leg and then his second as Hedger had his off stump removed, Brackley had limped to 40 for 5, a position from which they never recovered. With the introduction of Steve Godfrey and Greg Jenkins wickets continued to fall with some excellent catches being taken by cubs; of particular note the two at first slip by Ben Sim of Godfrey and the “champagne moment” catch by Sear at point to remove R. Cartwright. When Godfrey held his own catch of Jenkins the Brackley innings was over with a poor total of 80 posted.<br /><br />Never wanting to make things easy for themselves cubs lost wickets chasing that small total. Jamie Leggett (22) started well crashing three boundaries from the first over but fell caught behind in the third. Jenkins struggled with the paceless track and faired no better, being bowled in the 8th over for 11. Pip Webb tried to inject some emphasis into the run chase but didn’t time the ball well, falling caught at deep mid off having failed to find the boundary. When Ben Sim was caught in similar fashion trying not to get bogged down Cubs were four down for 60, however the experience of Steve Godfrey (13) and effective hitting of Nick Talbot (16) saw cubs home without further drama. So silverware for the 1st XI for a third year running sees a successful era for the club as a whole continue.

3rd XI beat Little Horwood by 1 wicket

Fred & I decided to go on a cricket tour this afternoon, taking in Orchard Ground, Wingrave and Brackley.<br />At Orchard Ground, Cubs 2s were comfortably placed against Leighton Buzzard, messrs Carter & George stroking the ball around to good effect and talk was of whether we should to declare or just rack up 300. Stalky clipped one off his legs straight into square leg's grateful hands, Carter arrowed one at mid off, flat-spotting and splitting the ball in the process and, at 160 for 8, the talk changed to making sure we used up the overs.<br />No such problem at Wingrave where Cubs had skittled Horwood for 92, Capt. Loverocket with a five-fer, & gaining more than 20 overs in the process. We arrived when Cubs were about 60 for 6 in reply, only Prof Middleton having set a solid base . Then it was 72 for 9, with a messed up batting order seeing Loverocket and Usain Gloveman bringing up the tail. Phew, Gloveman chips one straight to mid off when we are tied on 92 and he.......drops it!!! "I knew he'd drop it as soon as I hit it" said Gloveman afterwords, shaking and foaming at the mouth as he came off. One of the other team members told me later that evening that Gloveman had had to take his whites straight to Sketchleys after the game!<br />On to beautiful Brackley then. But too late.....all there was to see was their groundsman mowing the pitch after the game, Cubs having skittled them for 80 and got there 4 down in reply. Champions!!!! I conned Fred into buying me shandy, a magical moment for a Scotsman.<br />Back to Orchard Ground to see what Cubs 2s had managed. 206 as it happens but that didn't look enough as with three wickets down and 120 on the board , Leighton's skipper started to despatch the bowling to several parts of the ground between mid-wicket and mid-on. Somehow the Brigadier brought about a Divine Intervention as their skip got himself run out, whereupon the remaining 6 wickets fell for 10 runs, with Jacob Watson being our chief beneficiary. Extra-special thanks to Baino for a humongous stumping appeal from backward square after PC had decided the batsman was so in it wasn't worth taking the bails off. As always Baino kept his audience in stitches!!<br />3 games, 3 wins, 2 champions - can't be bad!!

2nd XI beat Brackley II by 61 runs

This was where it was sealed. At the start of the day there were still four teams in with a chance of winning Div 9. By the end of the day Cublington 2s were celebrating the fifth promotion as champions in a row. Cublington elected to bat, on a damp green wicket, to take control of the game and for the best chance to gain the lion's share of the points. The plan backfired early, with the loss of Andy Carter for a duck, and the top order struggled against some very good Brackley bowling. In a rain shortened game Cubs went for drinks with the score on 46 for four after 20 overs. Timmis was especially difficult to play with just nine runs coming off his first seven overs. Josh Walker got the score board moving with a belligerent 34, and some late hitting from Orchard, Gadsby and Farr took the total to a semi-respectable 138 off 40 overs. Baines continued his run of getting injured in interesting and amusing ways by getting in the way of Farr's sharply struck pull off the last ball of the innings while umpiring at square leg. It took him amidships and he went down like he'd been shot. Refreshed by a first class tea Cubs went out determined to make up for some wayward batting. Pennell fell early to a smart caught and bowled from Orchard, but Hollyoak, Brackley skipper and key batsman remained in the way. He was dropped while in single figures and survived a caught behind appeal, but was finally cleaned up by Orchard. Brackley also struggled on a difficult wicket and, oddly, also reached drinks on 46 for four. Brackley were always behind the rate, though, and as wickets fell steadily, hope became belief. A four man run out (Osborne chased to the boundary, Carter threw to China who relayed to Walker at the bowler's end), another run out off a dropped slip catch, and some tight bowling kept up the pressure. Spencer was the pick of the bowling, well supported by the other seamers. The spinners didn't get a look in. Congratulations to all who have played in the 2s this season. A remarkable effort to clinch the division with a week still to go. Our apologies to the diners in the Unicorn who were suprised by the volume of some of the singing, and to the barmaids who put up with several renditions of 'Roxanne' and Why, why, why Fiona'.

1st XI drew with Horspath II

Cublington entertained Horspath at the Orchard Ground in a much anticipated top of the table clash that could have seen Cublington Crowned champions. Despite the weather trying its best to ruin an excellent cricket match, a reduced over affair ended in a close draw that sees both sides still with the possibility of being crowned champions at their respective games next week.<br /><br />Horspath, batting first having won the toss, were given a stern examination early on by the back to form Jon Waugh and Will RT. First wicket to fall was Cooke, caught behind off Will RT and when Waugh had Jones and then Parker both trapped LBW in consecutive balls, Horspath were 39 for 3 in the 13th over. Rain intervened and the game lost 90 minutes, equating to a loss of 26 overs. On resumption, Horspath started slowly and the introduction of Sayers and Jenkins further restricted the flow of runs. When Jenkins had Creed bowled for 18 and then Todd caught at slip for 46, Horspath were 95 for 5 having utilised 25 of their 40 overs. Henderson though started to accumulate runs mainly though the on side and particularly through cow corner. Despite setting the field accordingly Cubs failed to take this important wicket until the 38th over, by which time Henderson had 47 and the Horspath total had reached 150, closing at 154 for 8 from the allotted 40 overs.<br /><br />With just 34 overs to reach this competitive total cubs started badly with the loss of Leggett to a superb legside stumping by Todd of Cummings. With Godfrey caught at first slip for naught and then Pip Webb given LBW after a flashings 23, prospects didn’t look good. Sim and Jenkins steadied the ship however and made steady progress towards the target with few problems. At 126 for 3 with 6 overs remaining Cubs were well positioned for a victory and for the title, but when Jenkins fell caught and bowled to Creed for 38, schizophrenia spread through the dressing room and wickets fell where common sense would have seen cubs home. With Rodnight needlessly run out, Sim holing out at cover and then Tomlinson bowled by Henderson, Cubs were 140 for 7 with overs running out. With the further loss of Sear and WRT, it was left to Jon Waugh to block out the last two balls to secure the draw with cubs 8 short of their target, and everything to play for next week.

3rd XI lost to Bletchley Town III by 2 wickets

Bletchley. What does it mean to you ? Dobbies Garden Centre ? Pink Punters ? (No, don't answer that !)To me, it's a model railway station from my early years: after all, Bletchley was a major stopping point north & southbound for about a century before it was usurped by MK Central. To my wife, it's where her mother spent the war years transcribing what the Codebreakers did. We took the old girl there not long before she slipped upstairs: as we took her round, her face was completely aglow as she remembered all those happenings from 50 years previous.<br />It means something else to me as well - don't think I've ever won a bloody game there !!!! So this one was no differant and, yet again, we did ourselves rather than being comprehensively outfought by the oppo.If you want a clue, look at how many our top six totalled between them and at 55 for 6 after 20 overs , you have to say we had taken aim and carefully shot ourselves in both feet. However, between them, Loverocket, Gloveman, Jacko, and the Horse-Worrier (paid for his efforts!!) compiled a further 101 from 22 overs so that was at least a total to defend.<br />We gave away too many runs too early, 30 on the board after 5 overs. Then Jacko got 2 including a lucky bowled via Talbot's inside edge & back pad, Colin covered the yards to take a running steepler,& Alec Twobrains (does not apply to his batting) got an LBW to reduce them to 60 for 4 after 14. Door open we thought : sadly, Richard Fletcher had other ideas and, in combination with first Galvin and then Kyle Turner, they gradually eased their way towards our total, despite Alec getting us all hot & bothered with a flurry of 3 late wickets which he well deserved.

1st XI beat Tiddington II by 1 run

Cublington secured promotion to Division four with a low scoring affair against Tiddington on Saturday. Losing the toss and bating first Cubs made an impressive start with Leggett hitting the ball to all parts and dominating the Tiddington seamers. Leggett reached 50 from a total of 57 in the 10th over and had set the foundations for a big total. But how quickly the game of cricket can change. The loss of Jenkins (11) and the subsequent introduction of Tiddington Spinners Pykett and Smith saw the game turned on its head as wickets began to tumble. Leggett played on to Smith for an excellent 58, Webb was bowled by Pykett for 3 and when Sim was adjudged LBW for a first baller, Cubs had slumped to 81 for 4 in the 22 over. Godfrey and Skipper Tomlinson slowed the haemorrhaging of wickets for a few overs before tomlinson was trapped LBW for 14 and Godfrey was caught at short mid-on trying to gain control from the Tiddington spinners. Kieron Sear(10) and Howard Sayers (14) offered some resistance, however with the needless run out of Jono Waugh with 6 overs still to bat, the Cublington innings was over at a miserable 129 all out. <br /><br />Cubs gifted Tiddington a start with 6 extras in the first 9 balls but Will Rayner-Thompson made amends with the final ball of his first over, having Goodman trapped LBW for 3 giving Cubs an early breakthrough. The second wicket came from a superb piece of work from Sayers at square leg, collecting the ball and throwing down the stumps at the bowlers end to run out Sims, and when Waugh had Mackie LBW for 1 in the 8th over Tiddington started to wobble. WRT clean bowled lefthander Pykett for 5 to give Cubs their 4th wicket however Robinson (47) continued to accumulate runs as wickets fell. Sayers accounted for Robinson at the right time though, caught by Jenkins and when Maule was trapped LBW for 8 Tiddington were 86 for 6, but still in a relatively strong position. Greg Jenkins (4-32) had other ideas though and as Manning pushed Tiddington towards their target, Jenkins methodically removed his partners with some fine off spin bowling. In the 35th over, with just two runs needed and one wicket remaining, Manning attempted to end the game with one shot of Jenkins, only to find the bucket hands of a tumbling Will Rodnight at deep midwicket. Having held the catch Rodnight was duly mobbed by team mates, having secured 25 points and promotion.

2nd XI drew with Tiddington III

Cublington II went into their home match against Tiddington III level on points with Horspath IV at the top of Cherwell Division 9. With only a few games left until the season’s climax, this match was of crucial importance.<br /><br />Having lost the toss and been put into bat, Cubs struggled against the movement that Tiddington openers Wood and Johnson-Coleman were finding with the new ball. With Steve George managing a well fought 25, Cubs found themselves 56-3 after 19 overs. Nick Osborne then came to the crease and immediately looked more comfortable against the Tiddington spinners who were brought on. Ably assisted by Chris Baines (29*), Sam Carter (24) and Kit Gordon-Stuart (35*), Osborne hit fifteen 4s and two 6s in his quickfire 89. Once Osborne was dismissed (bowled Evans), Baines and Gordon-Stuart plundered nearly 40 runs from the last 5 overs as Cubs finished up 226-9.<br /><br />With a strong total on the board, Cubs saw the opportunity to grab 25 points but were frustrated early on as catches were put down in the slips off of the bowling of Tom Gadsby and Ben Orchard. The wickets began to fall however as Captain Gadsby bowled a threatening line and was assisted by keeper Paul China with a sharp catch and stumping. Tiddington’s Cashman frustrated the Cubs players with an admirable knock of 35 but victory moved within sight as batsmen 8 and 9 fell to catches in the ring from balls which could well have been dispatched to the boundary. One wicket was required from the final 2 overs bowled by Gadsby (4-51) and George but the draw was confirmed as Evans and Fisher stood up to strong pressure around the bat and saw out the remaining 12 balls successfully.<br /><br />The result left Tiddington with 5 points and Cublington with 20, going 8 points clear of Brackley II at the summit of Div 9 as title rivals Horspath IV dropped to 3rd place having lost to Bledlow Village III.

1st XI beat Didcot by 10 runs

A must win game for Cublington started badly when they had to leave for Didcot without opening bowler Waugh who had unfortunately overslept!! Things didnt get any better when they lost the toss and were put in on a rather green looking pitch. Both openers were lost early, but things looked on the up with Will Simmonds and Pip Webb putting together a solid partnerhip before Simmonds departed to a very good caught and bowled. Webb hit 2 fours and 3 sixes, one a huge one into the Didcot Power Station grounds that scared the men in the white helmets, but he too went soon after, and the rest of the batting didnt last long to leave Cublington all out for 136. So, needing early wickets, and with no third man or fine leg, Will Rayner Thomson removed two of their top order early and Ben Sim (in his role as opening bowling replacement for Waugh!!), bowled a tidy opening spell at the other end to keep things tight. The only way then to stay in the game was to try and dry up the runs, so Greg Jenkins and Howard Sayers, who bowled 39 overs between them unchanged, started their mammoth spells!! Sayers soon had the other opener and number 4 bat both caught by Sim,and then a wonder catch by Jamie Legget diving away at mid wicket removed their dangerous looking number 5.Jenkins wheeled away at the other end taking another couple, whilst Sayers finished with 5-28 from 19 overs. So, it came down to the last over, Didcot 13 to win, Cublington needing one wicket. 3 runs off the first 2 balls, then three balls blocked out, meant a draw looked likely with only one ball left....until Jenkins (3-36) produced a delivery that turned a fair way to clean bowl their last batsman. Far too close a game for comfort, but a remarkable victory leaving Cublington top and with 2 hard games to go agianst 2nd and 3rd to secure promotion.
