Twos Win as Gawcott Feel the Heat

If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen

Cublington 2’s pulled the rabbit out of the broiler to win away at Gawcott for the second time this season.

With a ten person line up featuring two U13 and one U15 player the side took to the field having won the toss and elected to bowl as the temperature reached 28 degrees. Although questioned for sanity at the time by all players and the local dog walkers only time would reveal the genius of this unconventional decision by the skipper.

Pegging Gawcott to under 90 at the halfway point the wily 2’s knew that anything under 200 could be chased on the fast outfield. Some late big hitting by Gawcott accelerated the total to 227 which seemed a bit of a mountain as the team gathered themselves for the chase.

And what a chase it proved to be.

Deciding 10 players was excessive the top order decided to fall on their swords putting the score at 2 for 3 in the 4th over.

However a stand of 60 between Balme and Lewis moved things in the right direction and when Lewis played around a straight one Oscar Middleton took to the crease declaring ‘when I play one’s I sometimes don’t even bother to bring my bat to the game’. Plus a few other things about being neglected.

And then he set about putting Gawcotts formidable attack to all parts of the ground. 150 required became 100 became 70 though when the Professor fell for 64 a win still looked highly unlikely.

But not according to the 2’s youth policy. Runs for Theo (who broke the family tradition of trying to keep the ball on the square) and Harrison on his senior batting debut. But when Sam ‘Hash’ Brown swaggered out to the crease 30 from 18 still looked a big ask. Crash bang wallop and it’s 11 from 6, 5 off 2, three from the last ball. Smash - four runs - game over. Oscar unbeaten on a superb 80 something, Sam still swishing on 20.

A remarkable run chase that will be remembered for a long time by those involved.

‘Grab your gear boys I’m off to the Cock Inn for pink cocktails and a dance to 80’s disco classics’.
