Losing our skipper and keeper the night before was not ideal, but we approached our first league match with high hopes and positively with an inexperienced side

Choosing not to field for 45 overs, we tried to bat for 45 and very nearly did it! Never easy to score against tight bowling, our batters dug in with the sole aim of occupying the crease against newly promoted Westbury who looked a decent side. Steve's Godfrey and George negotiated the first 16 overs, before Steve Godfrey was out LBW and at half-time we were 44-2. After 30 overs when Steve George was given out LBW by umpire Steve Mackie (What has Steve got against Steve's?) the score was 58-2 and only thanks to a late flurry from Steve Bullock and Oscar Williams did we manage 2 batting points. Solid defence from Ryan and Matt Jones on debut were encouraging signs.

Oscar Williams castled an opener and Steve Godfrey induced a sharp chance, snaffled by Steve Bullock to remove the other one, but Westbury Skipper rode his luck (dropped 3 times) and saw his side home. However this was not before Oscar Williams caught a superb catch off Alexa Wilson's steady medium pace for her maiden 'senior' wicket.
