We were lucky enough to have a great day's cricket at a beautiful ground in the Chilterns. Cublington fielded a mixed, but talented team with five juniors who almost carried the old 'uns to victory. The Lee batted first and knocked up a solid 202, perhaps 20 over par. Ollie Fairhurst was laid low by shin splints after two overs, and was badly missed from the attack, but nine others chipped in, with Gus Macleod and Jack Rodnight the pick of the bowling. Two sharp run outs from Rodnight pinned The Lee back, as did a stunning one-handed catch from Tom Scott on his senior debut. Harry Gadsby stood out for immaculate work in the field, taking several for the team.
Rodnight and Inglis opened the batting for Cubs putting on 44 for the first wicket. Ings-Chambers senior came in at three and flayed The Lee's attack to all points, OK, to extra cover. Once the oppo skipper realised that was his shot the run rate slowed. He'll need to learn the bludgeon and the yahoo if he's to make a real Sunday cricketer. The middle order kept Cubs in touch with the run rate but wickets fell regularly enough to keep on the pressure. Gadsby T and Ings-Chambers C added 40 for the 8th wicket but the chase got away from us despite a few lusty blows from both batsmen.
